Tabling /ˈteɪ bəl ɪŋ/: 2014-2017
The concept of Tabling began in London in 2014 as an idea of creator and executive producer, Nicholas Koy Santillo. In the first iteration of Tabling: The Podcast from 2014-2017, we brought together a group of theatrically minded individuals to explore a particular classical play as if preparing a full scale production. One person acted as the facilitator of the play. Episodes were divided by the play's acts and are recorded in a candid free-flowing conversation. In the introduction, we discussed the play as a whole, and the facilitator presented a lens to focus the discussions. These ranged from conceptual choices to performance history, textual analysis to social and political significance. For each act we did a cold read - those recordings are available here on the website - before beginning the discussion.
"Tabling" comes from the industry term "table work," which is the work done prior to the actors getting up on their feet in the rehearsal space. Table work is a precious time in the rehearsal process for the ensemble to ask questions, explore ideas, and commence the journey of the production as a collaborative team. "Tabling" gives a glimpse into the intellectual and creative ensemble work that goes into producing theatre.
